Whatcha' Gonna Wear on New Year's Eve?

Hey fashion friends!
Are you still wondering what you are going to wear to celebrate 2010? I have an idea! If you know how to use a sewing machine, I can teach you how to make a dress just in time for New Year's Eve! I have one session of my Little Black Dress class left on Dec. 29th and Dec. 30th at the Stitch Lab.
Using my original pattern, I will walk you through the entire process of sewing a dress including laying and cutting out the pattern pieces from fabric, sewing curved seams, under-stitching, sewing princess seams, sewing darts, sewing a lining, gathering, installing an invisible zipper and hemming. Check out the Stitch Lab website to sign up and stayed tuned for new Spring classes including more Open Studio, Hemming, and Destroy Your Denim!!! xo, Tina Sparkles

The Quintessential Little Black Party Dress - Sewing Class at the Stitch Lab

  • Everyone needs a little black party dress and this one is a winner — literally! It won 2nd place in Blackmail’s Little Black Dress contest in October and has some pretty fantastic design features, including all-in-one dropped cap sleeves, an asymmetrical neckline (which is apparently all over the runways for 2010) and a mini bubble skirt. Students should have at least Level 1 sewing experience, which means you should know how to work your sewing machine and be confident sewing a seam. In this class I will walk you through the entire process of sewing a dress using my original pattern; including laying and cutting out the pattern pieces from fabric, sewing curved seams, under-stitching, sewing princess seams, sewing darts, sewing a lining, gathering, installing an invisible zipper and hemming. $145 per student.

Three upcoming sessions, just in time to make a New Year's Eve Dress!

  • Saturday & Sunday, December 12 & 13, 3:30-10:00PM
  • Saturday & Sunday, December 26 & 27, 11:00 - 5:30 PM
  • Tuesday & Wednesday, December 29 & 30, 9:00 - 3:30 PM
This class will be taught at the Stitch Lab (1000 S. 1st, Austin, TX). Click on their logo for more information on this class and to register.

Handmade Holidays are Coming...

NEW SUBLIME STITCHING PATTERNS!
Goody goody gumdrops! Sublime Stitching has new transfers for you! In plenty of time for the holidays. Unless you're one of those crazy people who started stitching your gifts back in June. Wait, did I say "crazy"? I meant to say smart. Smart and well-organized. This lineup includes:

Jewish Symbols - Oy vey! (I've always wanted to say that.) Yes! We finally, finally have patterns to make bubbeh proud. Jewish friends, challah! (Mom, I'll explain later.)

Christmastime - We figured more was more, and we couldn't possibly cram it all on just one Winterland sheet.

Meaty Treats - My sincere apologies to our many vegetarian stitchers. No animals were harmed in the making of these patterns. Although, I'm kinda hungry now.

ARTIST SERIES: Tara McPherson - We are THRILLED to have Tara McPherson as the latest addition to the Artist Series, and we know you will be too, since you have been beggin for her to be included.

NEW STITCHABLE TOTE DESIGN by BONNIE RUE OF MODEL CITIZEN

Boy howdy do you love our exclusive, stitchable eco-totes. We can't hardly keep them in stock! So, I decided to begin inviting other designers to create designs for them! What, do I have to do everything around here? The newest addition to our series of stitchable totes is by Bonnie Rue of Model Citizen Clothing. We went grape-ape for her tiger-headed ladies and thought you would too. Bonnie is an independent designer based in Austin, and her design will be available for a limited time. Looks for new designs in the series! And hers is the first to be made in conjunction with Hart Crafts. You'll just have to wait and see what that's all about. Model Citizen Stitchable Tote - $14.00

My new book: Embroidered Effects OUT NOW!

It's here! It's here! It's here! My new book is in!

Embroidered Effects: Projects and Patterns to Inspire Your Stitching
by Jenny Hart (Chronicle Books)

Eeeeep! We have our first batch of my new book now in stock! It's juuust now being released but will be available everywhere by October. You can be among the first to get your hot little stitching hands on one. It covers embroidery how-to from the very beginning to more advanced and unique techniques (like stitching combos for unusual effects), over 20 projects with pages and pages of full-color photos, a new stitching sampler, large-format transfers (yes, the fandancer on the cover is one of them) and pictures of my cat! Had to mention that.

I am so thrilled with how this book turned out, but it would not have been possible without the help of many people, including Ginger Edwards, Amy Bindel (Early Bird Special), Flor Hernandez (Feeling Stitchy) and Rachel Hobson (Average Jane Crafter), who helped me stitch up projects for the book and did a beautiful job. This book is plum near everything (but just the tip of the embroidery-berg) I have learned about embroidery over the last eight years between two covers. Almost. Not quite. It was a lot of fun work! I hope you enjoy it!

NEW BOOK! Embroidered Effects - Limited First Batch Available Now! $24.95

FEATURED CUSTOMER GALLERY SUBMISHY

There are some really good 'uns in the Customer Gallery right now. I practically had to close my eyes and just point to one to make a selection. This one is by Sara, who made it from one of the patterns in my newly release Sublime Stitching Baby Bib Kit. I especially love the white French knots she added along the front of the mama owl. Even if the designs aren't destined for a baby bib, they can go on oh-so many other things (Sara's going to frame this). Nice work! Had to hoot about it (cringe).

New Sublime Stitching from Chronicle Books!

Why, hello there. It's awfully nice to see you again. What have you been up to? Stitching? I have been working, traveling, tending to a sickly cat (who's a movie star, I'll have you know) and hoping summer won't bear down on us here in hot 'ol Texas just yet. I can still open my door without it feeling like a blast furnace, and that's nice. Okay, on with the embroidery goodness!

NEW SUBLIME STITCHING RELEASES FROM CHRONICLE BOOKS

I ask you: is that not a cute baby? Her name is Marin. This is just a peek at the full-color booklet that comes inside the Baby Bib Kit which is out now! The photos were all taken here in Austin at my house by my long-time friend (and former bandmate) Kenneth B. Gall and the baby was generously loaned (heh) by my good friend Mindy who used to play drums in my old band The Hidden Persuaders (waaay back when). All three of these titles are now available!

Be sure to check out Average Jane Crafter's blog where she has lots of pictures of the Stitchable Stationery set she stitched up!

These things take time. All of these projects were designed and delivered last year, so I'm really, really excited to see them coming out now. And, get yourselves ready for my new, big honkin' book coming out in the fall!

UPCYCLING WINNERS ANNOUNCED

The winners of the Sublime Stitching Upcycling Contest have been announced and are up on the site! It was not an easy decision because we know how much heart, soul and environmental awareness went into each and every project (I especially liked the layered aprons. You know who you are). We are in the process of featuring all the entrants in the Customer Gallery in rotating batches, so if you don't see your project in there yet, don't fret! It will appear as if by magic, real soon.

Very special thanks to our guest judge Autumn Wiggins of The Upcycle Exchange, and regular contributor to Crafting a Green World.

HELLO CRAFT: SUMMIT OF AWESOME

And, it was, totally awesome. Be sure to read my re-cap on the Sublime Stitching blog about this wonderful event. Many thanks to the organizers who invited me and put on a super-tight, well organized and most importantly, fun event that provided resources and inspiration to many independent designers and business owners. I gave a craftnote speech, taught an embroidery workshop, and even brought my mom along! Read all about it.

ICE ATLANTA / ART STAR CRAFT BAZAAR / MAKER FAIRE

May 30 - 31 is exploding! So, the machine that allows me to be in multiple places at once is broken. Which means I have to make a choice where to be on a weekend when three fantastic craft events are taking place. But, for the first time ever, Sublime Stitching is sending goodwill ambassadors Jessica and Jordan to I.C.E. Atlanta (they're excited- this is the first official "business trip" Sublime Stitching has been able to do like this, and I'm excited for them). Jordan fills orders and answers customer emails, and Jessica does blogging and web graphics (among many other things). if you'll be at ICE, please be sure to go meet them. They make my life a whole lot easier and are just two of the sweetest and coolest people ever. I'm lucky like that. While Jessica and Jordan are in Atlanta that same weekend, I will be at the Art Star Craft Bazaar in Philadelphia seeing my good friends of Art Star, Erin, Megan and Cisco. Another gut-wrenching decision is that I will miss the Bay Area Maker Faire that same weekend! But, our good friend Mr. Jalopy will be around so be sure to give him a hearty hello. If'n you're like me, and can't be in three places at once, choose the event nearest you and get there!

You're Never Too Old to Wear Barbie

True you might be at the point in your life where you are a little too old to be playing with Barbie, but what about wearing her? From high end boutiques to hand made on Etsy designers are still showing the love for their favorite childhood doll. It is Barbie’s 50th and Mattel and Naughty Secretary Club are celebrating.

The first person that came to mind when I thought about wearing Barbie was the amazingly talented Margaux Lange. You can find her one of kind work on Etsy or her website. Margaux explains her love of Barbie by saying: Barbie™ was immensely important in fueling my creative life as a child, and ironically continues to be such for me as an adult. My "Plastic Body Series" jewelry stems from a desire to re-purpose common materials in combination with metals. I am inspired, terrified and fascinated, first and foremost by humans. Whatever her rationale I’m just thankful for the rad jewelry.

At first I thought fashion designer Jeremy Scott seemed a bit subversive for Barbie, but then I recalled his love of Care Bears and thought maybe not. March 9 – 28 if you just so happen to be jet setting in Paris stop by the colette store and check out the special Barbie™ boutique featuring a capsule apparel collection “Barbie™ by Jeremy Scott”, which will include Scott’s iconic trench coat, dresses and tees, all done in fun Barbie® patterns and iconography. Additionally, colette has commissioned additional Barbie™ accessories for “grown up” Barbie® girls including a mobile phone, luxury jewelry, stationery, candles and cosmetics.

Fuchsia haired jewelry maven Tarina Taraintino partnered with Barbie awhile back for a line of fun girlie jewelry. There are tiaras, chunky rings, charm necklaces and more. She even has her own pink haired Barbie, sometimes life is just not fair.

Barbie gets all “doll'd up” with Stila with a limited edition spring collection of beauty cans and a talking palette (yes I mean really talks you through your eyeshadow)! Apparently there is a larger collection of makeup and a Barbie hair dryer coming this fall available at Sephora. If that hair dryer is Barbie pink I am totally ditching my current gray model.

So what if your house wanted to wear Barbie? Well my favorite designer in the whole wide world Jonathan Adler is about to make that exact thing happen for one lucky house in Malibu, CA. That’s right kids the Barbie Dream House is fer realz! Jonathan Adler Loves Barbie™ – For Grownups is a capsule collection of “Jonathan Adler Loves Barbie™” décor pieces, including designer pottery, pillows, decorative objects and more – available at one of Adler’s nine stores or on his website. Additionally, Jonathan Adler and Barbie® will partner on an ultra stylish Barbie® Collector doll, which comes with coordinating doll-size furniture (of course!). These chic creations will hit retail shelves in the U.S. in September 2009. OMG I can hardly wait to see!

Last but not least I wanted to celebrate Barbie and her impeccable personal hygiene in my own special way. I gathered up my supply of Barbie hair brushes, a few plastic flower petals, chunky beads and made a little necklace magic. This necklace is an ode to Totally Hair Barbie.

Once I selected just the right supplies I used my Dremel to drill holes in the tops of the hair brushes. From here I wire wrapped them using eye pins so that they would hang from my jewelry wire. I also wire wrapped my flowers with eye pins. Once this was all done I strung everything up with a combination of fun vintage beads, added a clasp, crimped up the ends and my masterpiece was ready.

I think Totally Hair Barbie would like totally appreciate this necklace. Consider it a gift from me to you on your special day Barbie. Happy 50th from Naughty Secretary Club.

Sublime Stitching Survey

It's time for the annual Sublime Stitching Pick-Yore-Brain Survey! This is your chance to just plain tell us what you want instead of us sitting around, scratching our collective heads and wondering. You, dear stitchers, are an essential element of Sublime Stitching and its wonderfulness. Without you, Sublime Stitching would be for naught. Really! It's the plain truth. TAKE THE SURVEY HERE The survey is around 50 questions, so please begin it when you'll have time to do the whole thing and submit it. You don't have to agonize over your responses- just tell us your first impressions and thoughts (nearly all questions are multiple choice and comments are optional). Also, this is pretty cool: We were contacted by a reporter from NPR seeking information on crafting and the economy so I've included some of the reporter's questions on the survey (those questions are indictated). After all, Sublime Stitching does have the smartest and most insightful customers around! Wouldn't it be cool to hear on the radio "According to a survey conducted by Sublime Stitching..."? Yes, it would! That would be you telling the world what you have to say! x - x - x - x - x - x - x - x - x - x - x - x - x - x - x - x - x - x 20% OFF SALE ENDING SoOoOOoN!

MICRO MONOGRAM CHALLENGE WINNER!

We got out the magnifying glass and carefully inspected the numerous entries we received for the Sublime Stitching Micro Monogram Challenge. After much squinting and eye-strain, we selected a winner whose project really stood out! (Under a microscope, that is) Melissa Taylor of Hill Air Force Base in Utah, submitted the teensiest little tiny monograms on wee little pillowcases! You simply must have a look at them in the Sublime Stitching Customer Gallery along with our favorite runner-up entries.

Here at Sublime Stitching, we like to maintain some discretion about our celebrity clients. We don't blab to you every time we get an order from you-know-who or that-one-actress-who-was-in...instead we jump around the office and squeal in private. So, when a celebrity does the blabbing for us to a major publication -well! We instantly become their biggest fans. Actress Ginnifer Goodwin (Big Love, Walk the Line, He's Just Not That Into You) generously tipped readers of InStyle off to the fact that she's a Sublime Stitcher! The entire Sublime Stitching staff is going to go see her new movie this weekend as we are now Ginnifer's biggest fans! A great cause and yummy yummy treats!

Since I closed my business, Amet and Sasha, I've been a wee bit silent on the crafting front. And why is that you might ask? Because I'm exploring food, baking to be exact. I'm even heading off to pastry school this spring. Can you believe it??!? Well, maybe you can, but my head's still spinning. One of my new projects is a food blog. It's just a wee baby of a blog, but if you like to eat, which I'm pretty sure is almost all everyone, then maybe just maybe you'll like my wee baby of a blog. But this is not why I'm writing. I'm writing because this month I'm taking part in a wonderful cause. It's a fundraising effort for a school lunch program in Lesotho. What's in it for you?? Amazing prizes. No, seriously... good good stuff. So please visit me and see how you can win some great food-related prizes while helping with a fantastic cause. If you have a blog and would like to help me tell the world about the raffle please do. There are SO many food bloggers out there donating to the cause. I'm donating a huge box of amazing brownies. Other people are donating things like Le Crueset products, cookbooks, classes.... so many great things. I hope your holidays are warm, cheery and full of many many tasty treats!

PROJECT: Mario Mushroom Wrist Warmers!

This holiday season whip up a cozy little gift, for the game boy (or girl) in your life. They're quick, they're cute and the pattern's adjustable! Get the pattern here!  xo, Vickie
What you need:
Worsted Weight Wool (amount varies based on size, but 100yds/110m usually does the trick!) in color: White
Scraps of Worsted Weight Wool in colors: Red & Black
Size US 6(4mm) DPNS
Tapestry Needle
Size
Adjustable (see "What to do")
Gauge
20sts x 28 rows=4" (10cm) in St st.
What to do:
Measure around the circumference of the future wearer's palm, excluding the thumb . If said wearer is unavailable for measuring, you can go by the measurements I usually work off of when making wrist warmers: Smaller Kid= 6"; Larger Kid= 7"; Woman= 8"; Man=9".
Because these are meant to fit snuggly, subtract 1" from the palm measurement. This will give you number "X". For example: Child's palm measures 6"-1"=5". "X" =5
To figure out how many sts to cast-on, multiply "X" by 5 (number of sts per inch). Once you have that number, round it up to the nearest multiple of 4 (to give you a workable number for K2,P2 ribbing in the round). For example: 5" x 5 sts per inch= 25. Nearest (rounded up) multiple of 4= 28. CO amount= 28 sts.
There you go! Ready to start? Well, ok then.
Cuff:
CO "X" sts. Distribute sts evenly on dpns. Join rnd, taking care not to twist.
Work in K2, P2 rib for desired length of cuff (I recommend about 2 1/2" for Smaller Kids; 3" for Larger Kids; 4" for Adults).
Beginning Main:
Next Rnd: Begin working in St st (knitting every rnd.)
Continue in St st until ready for thumb hole (I recommend 1" for Smaller Kids; 2" for Larger Kids; 2 1/2"-3" for Adults).
Thumb Opening: ( This section WILL BE KNIT STRAIGHT, not in the round.)
Next row (RS): Knit all sts. Once you've knit the last st on the last needle, flip piece over.
Next row (WS): Purl. Once you've purled the last st on the last needle, flip piece over.
Repeat last 2 rows, 4-6 more times (depending on size you're making).
End Main: (Return to working in the round)
Next rnd: Knit, rejoining the piece (this will close the thumb-opening top).
Repeat last rnd 1-4 more times (or until piece is 1/2" shorter than desired length)
Return to K2, P2 rib for 3 rows. BO in rib st.
Finishing:
Using scraps, tapestry needle & Duplicate Stitch, follow the chart to embroider mushroom on the front of each wrist warmer.
Duplicate Stitch Chart
(Need a duplicate stitch refresher course? See pg. 83 of my book, Knit Aid.)
Weave in ends. Block if necessary. Enjoy!

A big ‘ol THANK YOU to everyone who stopped by our booth and came to my embroidery demos at Maker Faire Austin last weekend! It sure was nice to see you there. I also had the honor of teaching esteemed Makers (and my friends from Dinosaurs and Robots), Mark Frauenfelder and Mr. Jalopy how to embroider. Embroidering is now officially a gentlemanly pastime. Men, take note and start those sewing circles!
